30 hours. but overnight, a gruesome discovery, one more body was found. a man wearing a life vest in the submerged part of the ship, raising the death toll to six. the nightmare began friday night at 9:45. the 490-foot liner was reported to be four miles off port, navigating through shallow waters just 10 o100 feet deep. drifting off the island of giglio. with a gash across its left side, within minutes water began gushing in and the vessel started tilting. at 9:50 a crew announcement. the now serious questions over how the ship's captain and crew responded. according to the ship's black box the coast guard wasn't alerted until 10:43 p.m.

and then ordered off 10:50. >> we had to wait over an hour and a half before we could get on to that boat and the boat was obviously sinking. >> reporter: the ship's captain francesco schettino is being held by authorities facing charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship. passengers claim he was among the first to escape. the last passengers evacuated three hours later. before his arrest, he told an italian tv station, we were the last ones to leave the ship. but those words of little comfort to those who clung to each other to survive. >> all i kept on telling him, i want to be with you. make sure you don't leave me. >> reporter: well, rescuers are facing more challenges today. bad weather, strong winds are creating rough seas around the vessel. the fear is that could move it further or even make it sink or even dump fuel into the water. robin? >> all right, lama, thank you very much. joining us now are bengie and

emily smith they were on that ship on their honeymoon. it's so good to see you this morning in rome. bengie, can you tell me when you knew something was wrong? >> the boat started tilting slowly and we felt this, you know, the whole gravitational shift on the boat. and then things started falling off the shelves. and then the tv started sliding off of its shelf. and then the lights flickered off and back on again. and at that point, we didn't -- we thought of nothing else but to grab our life jackets and get out of our cabins and move up to the fourth deck, which is where the lifeboats are. >> how did you go about getting out of your cabin and on the deck? >> there was screaming, children crying. a lot of confusion. there were crew members who said we have everything understand control. just be calm, don't panic.
7:07 am
but there wasn't any information. and the official announcement from the loud speaker didn't come on for 20 to 25 minutes, would be my guess. we waited, people speculated, but we didn't have any information for quite sometime. and even at that point, the announcement said, attention, crew members, there has been an electrical fault in the generators. we have it under control. our technicians are working on the problem. please be calm." and everyone knew that this was nonsense because the boat was leaning to the side. and since when does an electrical problem cause the boat to tilt? >> and i understand that you fashioned a rope? >> we had to improvise. there was no more instruction. no one was telling us what to do. the ship was leaning more and more and more. another passenger poufound the rope. and we tied knots in it.
7:08 am
>> it's just amazing that you all are doing this on your own. there's no crew members -- there was a press conference this morning that said that the captain used an unapproved and unauthorized maneuver being too close to shore like that. so it does appear that it was indeed human error with the captain. he's also being criticized, of course, for leaving the ship before everybody else was off. what would you like to say to the captain this morning? >> what a coward you are. people who are left behind were not related to each other by anything. we were helping each other to get out of their and stay alive. and he who is responsible for all of us left. that's all i can say. and people can just not believe that he's trying to lie. we feel that the costa cruise line is trying to lie right now and try to make things sound like it's all his fault. yes, but it's his fault, but it's not the end of the story. >> while we were there, you

7:14 am
because paterno wasn't sure how to handle the situation, he, quote, backed away. but those officials never told police. when the scandal broke, the board fired paterno. >> joe paterno is no longer the head football coach effective immediately. >> reporter: as the students rioted -- paterno's wife was, according to "the washington post," in a rage at the way her husband had been treated. but in this interview, paterno wouldn't glow. >> i've had a wonderful experience here at penn state. i don't want to walk away from this thing bitter. >> in the end, the man who staged his reputation for setting a higher moral standard for his players insist he did not violate his own code in this case. robin, back to you. >> dan, thank you very much. >> andrea canning is here with other top stories. good morning, robin and josh. happy monday to all of you. we begin with breaking news in the middle east. there's word this morning that
